TRADITIONAL ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE

Traditional Dawn Service on Mt Clarence, the location of the first dawn service in Western Australia in 1923, led by Padre White. He led the congregation to the top of Mt Clarence and as the service was held, a wreath was laid in King George Sound to commemorate those who fought.

Date: Sunday 25 April
Time: 5.30 – 6.00am
Venue: Desert Mounted Corps Memorial, Mount Clarence
Capacity: 500pax only 

Please note: Tickets will be available via the this link for access to the Dawn Service (bus service included). Buses will run from the Albany Entertainment Centre only and only between 0400hrs and 0500hrs. Tickets will be released on 9 April.

 

DAWN SERVICE LIVE SCREENING

Dawn Service simulcast to screen

Tickets will be available via the Albany Entertainment Centre (bookable online or collect) for access to the Dawn Service livestream simulcast to the Albany Entertainment Centre.

Tickets will be available from the Box Office or Albany Entertainment Centre website as of 9 April.

DAWN SERVICE SHUTTLE BUSES

GUNFIRE BREAKFAST

One of the traditions of Anzac Day is the ‘gunfire breakfast’ (coffee with rum added) which occurs shortly after many dawn ceremonies, and recalls the ‘breakfast’ taken by many soldiers before facing battle. The traditional gunfire breakfast will be held at the Albany Entertainment Centre with a $5 donation to the RSL following the Dawn Service.

NATIONAL ANZAC CENTRE


Over the Anzac long weekend, the National Anzac Centre will open at 9am and close at 5pm with last entry at 4pm.

 

There will be no pre-sale tickets or pre-booked ticketing available.

GENERAL ADVICE


Capacity at the Dawn Service is limited and attendance is by ticket only.

Patrons are advised to arrive early, or consider attending the Live Site at the Albany Entertainment Centre or via the live stream on the National Anzac Centre Facebook page or website.

Access to Mt Clarence is via free shuttle buses from the Albany Entertainment Centre between 4-5am. Please do not use the walking trails. There is no other vehicle access.

The Dawn Service will be simulcast at the Albany Entertainment Centre on a large screen. This site is easily accessible. Patrons with mobility issues or parents with young children are advised to consider this option.
 

GETTING TO MOUNT CLARENCE

I want to attend the Dawn Service on Mt Clarence. How do I get there?
Access to Mt Clarence is by the free, ticketed bus shuttle service. Buses will leave from the Albany Entertainment Centre between 4-5am. 

What time should I arrive?
We suggest arriving with enough time to make your way to the venue, find a viewing area and enjoy the atmosphere. For the Dawn Service - please allow for longer than usual due to the higher volume of visitors. We suggest as early as possible for the Dawn Service. Please note from 5.30am all will be quiet as the service commences.

Do I need a ticket to attend the service?
The Dawn Service at Mt Clarence will be a ticketed event due to Covid restrictions. You are advised to arrive early. Attendance is by ticket only.

 

Can I pre-book, reserve or buy a ticket for the bus shuttle service or Dawn Service?
Yes. This is a free bus shuttle service and patrons are advised that access to attend the Dawn Service will be by ticket only.

How many visitors can attend the service at Mt Clarence?
The site of the Dawn Service on Mt Clarence has limited capacity due to Covid restrictions. Once the capacity of the site is reached patrons will not be able to access the site. You are advised to consider attending the free Live Site at the Albany Entertainment Centre instead. See Live Simulcast section for more information. Additionally, the Dawn Service will be streamed live on the National Anzac Centre Facebook page and website.

What happens if there is bad weather? Will the Dawn Service still go ahead?
The service will go ahead in the event of rain and inclement weather. If the weather is considered dangerous to patrons events will be cancelled via radio and various media digital channels. The service takes place before sunrise, and the weather can be quite cold. All visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately.

Will there be road closures?
Apex Drive leading up to the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial will be closed to vehicles and foot traffic to allow the free bus shuttle service to run with minimal disruption and for the safely of pedestrians.

Will there be delays?
Due to the expected increase in visitors to the Dawn Service there may be delays and long queues. There will be refreshments available at the Albany Entertainment Centre shuttle bus terminal.

How often will the buses run?
Buses will run at approximately 15 minute intervals or as required.

HEALTH, FITNESS AND MOBILITY

I would like to attend the Dawn Service. What should I expect?
A moderate level of fitness is required. The service takes place before sunrise, and the weather can be quite cold. The service will go ahead in the event of rain and inclement weather. All visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately. Due to the large crowds, you can expect to stand for long periods whilst waiting to enter the Dawn Service Area and to use the amenities. There is limited first aid and amenities available on site and there is no seating available.

I have mobility restrictions. Can I attend Mt Clarence?
There is no seating at Mt Clarence. It is strongly recommended that patrons with mobility restrictions, parents with children and strollers or patrons that may find standing and walking for long periods of time difficult choose alternative options to partake in the Dawn Service. Consider attending the Live Site at the Albany Entertainment Centre or watch via the live stream on the National Anzac Centre Facebook page or website instead. 

Is there wheelchair and accessible facilities?
There is no accessible parking at Mt Clarence and no seating available. It is advised that you use the free bus shuttle service or attend the Live Site at the Albany Entertainment Centre.

ACCESS VIA WALKING TRAILS

I would like to take the pilgrimage up one of the walking trails.
Access to Mt Clarence is by the free, ticketed bus shuttle service. Buses will leave from the Albany Entertainment Centre between 4-5am. There is no lighting provided at any of the trails.

GENERAL INFORMATION

I would like to attend the Dawn Service. What amenities will be available at Mt Clarence?
Amenity at the Dawn Service is extremely limited. Entry will be by ticket only. There will be no refreshments available at this site.

Is there seating available?
There is no seating of any kind on Mt Clarence. Fold out chairs, shelters, umbrellas and eskies are prohibited.

Will there be shelter from the elements?
There is no shelter on Mt Clarence and you will be exposed to the weather for the entire period you are onsite. It is advised that you ensure you have sufficient protective clothing for all weather conditions.

How long will I be standing for?
Patrons can expect to remain standing for a significant period of time and should be aware that some locations will have restricted or no view of the commemorative service.

Can I bring my children?
It is recommended that parents with children and strollers consider attending the Live Site at the Albany Entertainmant Centre instead.

Will there be viewing screens?
There will be a viewing screen at the Dawn Service. There will also be a viewing screen at the Albany Entertainment Centre and will simulcast the Dawn Service live. At this location there will be refreshments to make your experience more comfortable.


Can I bring a picnic/esky to the Dawn Service?
No.

Are there any prohibited items?
Please exercise common sense and do not bring any unnecessary equipment or items to the Dawn Service, including chairs, umbrellas, tents or anything of that nature.

What can I bring to the Dawn Service?
It will be dark when you arrive so we recommend you bring a torch, suitable attire for the cool weather, including a raincoat or poncho in case of inclement weather.

 

Can I wear a family member’s war medals?
If you wish to wear family medals they should be worn on the right hand side of the chest.

Can I take photos?
Yes, but we ask for respect during the Service and no flashes are to be used at the Dawn Service.

Can I lay a wreath during the Dawn Service?
Once the official wreath laying has occurred, the public will be given an opportunity to come to the front to lay a wreath. If you wish to do this, can we suggest you try and arrive early and get as close to the memorial as possible to avoid any missed opportunity.


LIVE STREAM

I would like to engage with the Dawn Service in Albany but don’t want to be up at Mt Clarence. What options do I have?

Albany Entertainment Centre – Live Simulcast of Mt Clarence Dawn Service
There is limited capacity at this venue. Access will be on a first come first served basis. The Dawn Service simulcast will
be ticketed.
The Albany Entertainment Centre is a fully accessible facility with wheelchair access.

Live Stream via National Anzac Centre Facebook page and National Anzac Centre website
The Albany Dawn Service will be live streamed. If you do not wish to venture out , you will now be able to watch the service live, in the comfort of your home. This also allows people from all over the world to tune in and experience the Albany Dawn Service.


PLEASE NOTE

Capacity for the Traditional Albany Dawn Service on Mt Clarence at the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial is extremely limited. Patrons intending to attend this service at Mt Clarence are encouraged to plan well in advance and consider the above information carefully.
